Coaching

Three coaching services are available.  The first is the club visit by Syd to run a one-off session for club members.  The second is to give a talk or lecture on judo ancient or modern – ideal for technical conferences and the like.  The third is for national judo organizations that require long term help with national team players aiming for major international medals. Graded 1st Dan in 1955 aged 16
UK 3-man Team championships 1955 & 1956 - gold medal
First international  - (1957 European Championships – 1st Dan category).
Military service 57 - 59
Trained in Japan 1960 – 64 (Nichidai, Keishicho, Kodokan)
Graded contest 4th Dan 1963 by Kodokan. Got points towards 5th Dan
Fought in 1964 Olympics – Middle-weight category.
Fought in 1965 world championships - heavy-weight category.
Won silver medal in European championships 1965 (Open category)
Adriatic Cup silver medallist 1965 (heavyweight)
1967 – 1971 Chief instructor of London Budokwai - trained many international medal winners.

Graduated in Japanese language, history and literature London University (SOAS) 1971
Chairman of the British Judo Association 1985-87
Sumo 5th Dan. Vice-president of International Sumo federation 1990-92
Eurosport TV commentator for judo, sumo, wrestling and taekwondo
Former BJA national coach and team manager.
Currently judo 8th Dan
